Dating scams or catfish scams are highly popular with scammers. Unlike other scams, the dating scam allows the scammer to emotionally “get close” to the victim before pouncing. Dating scams used to only exist on legitimate dating sites such as Tinder and Plenty of Fish but are now initiated on any app where there is a chat facility. This article will give you 10 of the key signs to look out for on how to avoid catfish scams.

Being catfished can be soul destroying for the victim. They can feel silly for falling in love with a fictitious character and may have even shared personal information. This could be used to blackmail them unless certain demands are met. Knowing how to avoid catfish scams is paramount to enjoying yourself online and maybe finding your lifelong partner.

Look out for the super sexy profile pic

Dating scammers want to stand out from the crowd. They want to be noticed so they choose photos of good looking individuals. Glamour models and service men are usually the profession of choice of scammers for their profile pictures. Sadly these are freely available online. You can use a Google image search to see if the photo exists elsewhere. With glamour models, you stand a very good chance of being able to locate who the person is in the photo. With servicemen or other low profile people, this becomes harder.

If the profile photo looks perfect you should be sceptical of whether the person you are chatting to is in fact the person in the photo. This alone should not be enough to put you off completely – even good looking people can have trouble finding love. Just keep it at the back of your mind that all might not be as it seems.

Dating profile only has a handful of photos

Dating sites are designed so that users can add plenty of photos in order to sell themselves to a prospective partner. If someone you are talking to is only displaying one or two photos, you have to ask yourself why. Is this because they are shy or is it because they have only managed to steal one or two photos from an unsuspecting person?

If you start chatting to someone with a limited number of photos, it is not unreasonable for you to ask to see additional images. If they agree, be on the lookout for similarities with their other images. For example, if they all appear to be part of a set, this would not be natural, most people will have plenty of photos from different occasions. Some scammers will even show you photos from two totally different people. They will use the excuse that they had changed their image between the two photos.

Social media profiles are non-existent

If you are getting on with someone, it is not uncommon to ask for their social media profiles. This will allow you to view more about your partner or even continue the conversation outside of the dating app or site. If the person you are talking to makes an excuse as to why you can’t do this or claims they don’t have social media, it may be time to question their legitimacy.

Most people up to the 30’s will have at least one social media account. For someone to say they have no social media presence whatsoever should give you an indication you are talking to a catfish. You could attempt to call their bluff and ask them to create one, giving the reasons why it would be a good idea. This will put the scammer on the back foot which is where you want them.

Be mindful that the person may have legitimate reasons for not having a social media presence. It could be that a ex is stalking them and they want to keep it low profile. If this is the reason given, you should try and come up with alternative ways to verify that they are real.

Excuses not to chat on the phone

Much like the social media requests, catfishes will think of excuses not to chat on the phone. You have to question why someone would declare their love for you but decline to have a conversation. If your catfish is in the same country as you, they may well entertain a phone call to make their scam seem more authentic. It is worth remembering that the majority of female personas are really male scammers so in this case, a phone call is simply not possible on their part. Popular excuses include the scammer saying their phone is broken and they cannot make calls. This really isn’t a valid excuse. Said in isolation, you might give them the benefit of the doubt but if this excuse is made and you are already suspicious, you should walk away from the conversation at this point.

You need to be really persistent if you find your partner is reluctant to chat on the phone. No relationship is ever going to be sustainable with this obstacle in the way. You have valid grounds for pursing this request. If they blatantly refuse to chat on the phone, walk away.

They ask for money

Some catfish scams are designed to waste your time while others have a defined endgame. If your catfish scammer works overseas on an oil rig or both their parents are dead, you’ll know very early on in the conversation that this scammer will ultimately try to get money out of you. Unfortunately it’s not as black and white as that. Some scammers might be playing the perfect partner role. Out of the blue they may ask for money because some emergency has come up.

It is important to keep things in perspective. You’ve never met this person, you’ve never spoken to them on the phone so why should you send them money? Depending on the scammer they may just cut all contact after you have paid them. The more callous ones will try to eek more payments out of you on a regular basis.

If the scammer provides a paypal address or any other account information, it is important that you report this to the appropriate site. Although it will be easy enough for them to create a new account, it is all about inconveniencing them. If they have any funds still in the account when it is suspended, they will have trouble accessing these. It is important not to tell them that you have reported their account.

Selfies are off limits

We’ve already discussed that catfish don’t usually have a wide range of pics on their profile. A step further from asking for more pics is to ask for a selfie of them at that particular moment. It is impossible for the scammer to satisfy this request but it doesn’t mean you can’t ask. The clever scammers will have one or two images that they deliberately didn’t publish online so that they can be used in this exact situation. These images will be close up facial photos which probably are selfies taken by the rightful owner. Now the scammer may get away with sending one of these images, the key is to ask for another one later in the conversation.

Pof Catfish Stories

Asking for a second selfie is key. The chances are the lighting will be different and more crucially, in the second selfie, the person will be wearing totally different clothes. The scammer would actually be pretty silly to send this. They would more than likely come up with an excuse why they couldn’t send another.

If you really want to make the scammer work for a reason why they can’t send you a selfie, ask them to send you one of them touching their nose and pulling their tongue out. They definitely won’t have that image in their possession.

They joined a dating app but can never meet

The sole purpose of dating apps is to find your soulmate for life. If you find you have clicked with someone online, the next logical step is to actually meet them to see if there is any real attraction.

Catfish Profile Pictures

This is never going to happen for obvious reasons as our catfish is not who is being portrayed in the pics. Scammers will come up with all kinds of reasons as to why they can’t meet. Some of them will be plausible such as they are booked up for the next few weekends or they have to work late. Some will also be totally far-fetched and highly unbelievable if you are chatting to an inexperienced catfish.

Breaking this down and going back to reality, if you are in a situation where you like someone but are unable to find a suitable date, both parties will attempt a compromise. There certainly won’t be a situation where one side flatly refuses to attempt any kind of meeting or real conversation. If you are met with total resistance, the chances are you are being catfished.

Their job is in far away locations

For most of the catfish scams that originate in West Africa, the scammer will have some remote job. Most of these tend to focus on the oil industry as these can be in offshore locations where meeting is physically impossible. You have to ask yourself the question, if the person works that far away, how is a relationship going to work regardless of if they are telling the truth or not?

Ask plenty of questions about their work. If they are lying, the’ll trip themselves up at some point. Be prepared for answers like “we can’t disclose that sensitive information”. This is a standard type of response when they don’t know the answer to what you are asking.

Depending on the script, the job location will form part of the endgame. This is where they try to con you into paying for them to get out of their contract so that they can come home to see you.

Grammar is poor

You can normally spot a foreign catfish scammer based on their text style alone. Most dating scams originate in West Africa but South Asia is also a hotbed for scammers. These people will be playing the part of a traditional Westerner, born and bred in the USA or UK.

Their sentences won’t flow cleanly and some words will just not make sense. They may occasionally slip and throw in a Nigerian word which gives their game away. If you start correcting their grammar, they can start to get upset and accuse you of making fun of them. This is all a guilt trip to try and get you back onside and forget all about their illiteracy.

Story is not adding up

You need to use your intuition to decide how believable the story is you are being told. You’ll need to evaluate the behaviour and answers to all of the other sections above. This should help you to build a profile of the real person you are talking to. If there are red lights against more than one section then you should definitely not trust the person you are talking to.

Plenty Of Fish Scammers

It is important to ask as many questions as possible to build this profile. It is even acceptable to ask the same question twice but with different wording to see if you get a consistent answer. Take the scammer out of their comfort zone and off their script. Feel free to pull them up on inconsistencies in their story but don’t let on that you think they are a scammer. This is something we used to do but it could give the scammer information on how to improve their scam.

To summarise

Catfish scams can be difficult to tell friends and family about. Never assume the person you are talking to is the same person you see in the photos. They will need to give you unequivocal evidence that they are. Always take your time getting to know the person. Don’t volunteer too much information before you know the identity of the other person.
