MexicanCupid was started in 2005 and has since grown to be the #1 Mexican dating site. MexicanCupid is a niche dating site for residents and those interested in residents of just one country: Mexico.

Despite the limited focus, MexicanCupid has over 1 million members and counting. Much of the activity on this site is North American men looking for Mexican women, demonstrated by a rough split of a 50% Hispanic, 50% Caucasian member-pool.

MexicanCupid has a sleek design, excellent features (though mostly for premium members), and impressive anti-spam procedures to ensure each profile is genuine. If you are Mexican, or you like Mexicans, sign-up for this site.

MexicanCupid’s sign-up process is smooth and easy. All that’s necessary to start is your name, gender, password, and email address. You then finish the process with a few words about yourself, and your ideal match. Now you’re free to browse profiles.

At times, you’ll need to answer 2-3 more questions for your profile before you’re allowed to carry on browsing.

How to Locate Potential Matches

After providing MexicanCupid with your ideal match information, you can look through a large selection of potentially compatible matches. If these recommendations aren’t working for you, you can easily change your ideal match criteria, or put together a targeted search of your own. As a non-paying member, you have a limited array of options for communicating with other members. “Sending interest” is MexicanCupid’s equivalent to “winking” or “poking” someone. Messages can be sent between Standard profiles but they can’t be read until one of the two decides to shell out the cash for a premium membership. One bonus for the freebie-users is the lack of restrictions for communication with premium members. This is a perk you won’t be able to capitalize on very often however, as the vast majority of members seem to be of the Standard variety.

While many dating sites claim to have stringent anti-spam protections in place, rarely do I feel actually protected by these measures, or get to see them in action. My experience with this site was a little different.

When I first signed up, I breezed through the sign-up process, barely filling in any information as I just wanted to get in and check out the site. Registering for LatinAmericanCupid is a fairly straightforward process. Once you fill in your name, your gender, password and email address, all you do is write a paragraph describing yourself briefly and what you are looking for in a partner, and that’s it.

Although your profile isn’t totally finished at this point, you are still allowed to browse around and search other members if you want. When you have a chance, you can go back and complete your profile. In the meantime, there are a lot of members on this site, so you may be searching for quite a while.

How to Locate Potential Matches

After providing the criteria for your ideal match, the site will give you some matches to look at. You can view them by Profile, Basic View, Photo View, and Detail View. You can also sort them by Photos First, Newest Members, Relevance, and Last Active.

The site also allows you to customize your searches by either including or excluding profiles depending on location, age range, body type, ethnicity as well as their Zodiac sign.

When you’re a free member, your options for messaging are quite limited. You are only allowed to freely communicate with people who have a Premium membership.

A massive worldwide online dating site launched in 2006, Badoo is an OK option for Mexico. On face value, if you do a search of let’s say, women between 25 and 35 years old, you will turn up a lot of women in your search results.

The problem with Badoo though is that you will have to weed through a lot of low quality profiles in order to locate real people. The quality is just not as good as you will find on MexicanCupid although the selection is a lot larger. Because of my issues with the quality of profiles on Badoo, I would not focus on it as a starting point for my dating search.

Badoo works on the “freemium” model, which means that it is free to sign up, but you have to pay for upgraded features. The site operates in over 180 countries, and is popular in Latin America and Europe.

Tinder

Whether it’s Tinder or another dating app, more couples than ever are meeting online. But Tinder has always had a twist.

When Tinder made its debut back in 2012, it famously introduced the “Swipe” feature, allowing users to match with people based mostly on their photos. Stirring immense controversy at the time, it has now become a mainstream feature of most dating apps.

Before you dip your toe in the Tinder pool, I’m here to help you understand everything you need to know about it so you can swipe like a pro and (hopefully) find the perfect match.

Overview

Tinder is an online dating and social networking app that allows you to anonymously like or dislike other profiles based on their photos, bio, and shared interests. To like somebody, you swipe right. To dislike somebody, you swipe left. You only match if both of you swipe right.

Tinder also includes a “Super Like” feature, which shows other users in advance if you’ve “Super liked” them a.k.a. you really liked their profile.

After matching, you can then begin to swap matches. From these conversations, people decide whether they want to meet up in person or not.

Note: Tinder originally was dubbed a hookup app. While that may be some users’ intentions, many people have married or had long term relationships with their matches. Each person is different and may be looking for one thing or another. Tinder just connects you; it’s up to you to decide where you go from there.

In the early days of Tinder, you needed to sign up for Tinder using a Facebook account. You can now either use your phone number or Facebook to create an account.

If you do use your Facebook account, Tinder never publishes anything to your Facebook or uses your data in any way. It’s simply an identity verification tool. That’s it. It also makes account recovery easier if you experience any technical issues.

After you set your dating preferences, you can start searching for matches. You don’t need to have any pictures or profile information to begin swiping. However, you’re much more likely to receive matches if you do. So be sure to set this up beforehand. You don’t want to miss out on anyone great!

Next, set the distance you want to search for matches and age range. Turn on your GPS and allow Tinder to have access to your location. Tinder allows you to set a distance of between 1 mi (1 km outside the US) to 100 miles in range and 18-55+.

Naturally, if you live in a large city, you’ll have many more nearby options so you can set a closer range whereas if you live in a rural area, you’ll need to set the maximum distance farther.

How to Communicate with Other Members

Once you’ve matched with somebody, you can send a message to them right away. Even after you’ve matched, it’s no guarantee that the person will actually talk to you or respond to your messages. Some users swipe right on a lot of people and then filter from there.

It’s up to you what you say to somebody. You can just say hi, but you’re more likely to get a response if you ask a question or comment on something specific about the other person. You could also send a funny GIF as an icebreaker.

It’s all on you what you want to say. If you think somebody is cute then be engaging. Don’t just answer questions with one-word replies, but put some thought and effort into it. Likewise, ask questions back.

There are no rules with how long you should wait to set up an in-person meeting. However, it’s a good idea not to wait too long. You don’t want to get emotionally invested in a person only to find you have no chemistry in person.

Note: As with any dating app, there are some bad users on the app. Catfishing, harassment, and other issues can come up. If this happens to you, block the user and report them to Tinder.

Now that swiping has become mainstream, Tinder has created some additional features. As mentioned, “Super Like” allows somebody to see in advance if you like them or not. You get one free super like per day.

You can also use “Control Who Can See Your Profile” to determine whether everyone or just people you’ve swiped right can see you.

The last useful free feature is “Smart Photos,” which is a machine learning algorithm that fixes the orders of your photos based on user swipes. Basically, it sorts your photos from best to worst based on how other people swipe on your profile to appeal to a broader audience.
